A mere $25? Having spent hours on the support phone line, I paid 40€ to get the 'latest' drivers posted to me on a CD. Stupid me... needless to say, the moss was already growing on those drivers when the CD went to the press.
I've given up on HP offering any OS X support for this pile of glass and coloured plastic. Their drivers seem to be lagging half a year after Apple's OS releases and were slow and buggy as hell last time I checked. The drivers ate all spare CPU cycles even when the printer wasn't connected, which is kind of irritating on an iBook. It took literally hours to print a dozen pages (tried it... twice... yes, I'm stupid) and the scanning software couldn't find the scanner half of the time, and even then it couldn't handle files larger than 4 MB. *sob*

The good thing -- and I'm soon getting to the point here -- the good thing is that Panther supports the PSC 750 print engine natively, using the built-in DeskJet 900 drivers. You lose the scanning capabilities, but the PSC 750 scanner is so lousy that I don't really care anyway.

Hp psc 750 scanner failure. My scanner indicates scanner failure but the printer will work when printing off the net.can you help thanks. Respond to this. While searching for anything on the subject of 'scanner failure',(my unit happens to be a hp d135), I happened upon the above thread. My problem first revealed itself by my computer.
To h4X0r Panther into doing this, open Print Center and option-click the Add button in the toolbar of the Printer list window. Then select 'advanced' from the dropdown menu. Now pick USB Printer from the Device dropdown, set the Device Name to whatever you want, and pick 'HP DeskJet 900 Series, CUPS+Gimp-Print v4.2.5' as the printer model. Set the Device URI to usb://Hewlett-Packard/PSC%20750?serial=XXXXXXXXXXXX, where the XXXX string is the 12-digit serial number of the printer, all upper case. It's probably printed somewhere on the printer but I'm too lazy to check now. Or you can probably copy the URI from the HP-driver-encumbered printer instance. You may need to reboot.
Bliss! You now have a working (but still slow) color bubblejet printer.

Sales of multifunction peripherals (MFPs) are soaring--and with good reason. Not only do these combo devices offer a lot of functionality, they also provide high-quality output at a decent price. The HP PSC 750 ($299 list) is one such example, combining printer, scanner, and copier functions. About the only thing it's lacking is fax capabilities. But the excellent output from the PSC 750's four-color ink jet printer, as well as the capable flatbed scanner and copier more than make up for it.

Housed in a blue-and-gray case, the PSC 750 also saves face with its small form factor, standing only 10.7 by 14.1 by 17.8 inches (HWD). And at 19 pounds, this MFP won't overload anyone's desk or table. Setup took only a few painless minutes, thanks to the large, illustrated setup poster. The PSC 750 connects via USB; the traditional parallel interface setup is not supported here. Once we plugged the device into our PC, Microsoft Windows Me recognized the new hardware and installed the driver from the included CD-ROM. The remainder of the HP software is then automatically installed. Unlike many ink jet printers, printhead alignment is preset rather than based on the printing of test pages, which is convenient when inserting new cartridges.
A lift-up lid exposes the glass platen of the scanner. Underneath the scanner portion is a four-color ink jet printer. To install the black-and-tri-color ink jet cartridges, you must tilt the entire scanner top back. This conveniently exposes the ink jet - print engine, positioning the printhead carrier so that the cartridge area is easily accessible. Next to the scanner lid is the control panel, which includes a two-line LCD display and copy controls.

Many MFPs tend to skimp on components. Not the PSC 750. All parts of the PSC 750 - the printer, scanner, and copier - are strong. The printer is especially good. We used several of PC Magazine's printer test files and Hewlett-Packard's Glossy Photo Paper to test the quality of printed pages and found the quality and accuracy impressive. It prints at up to 2,400 by 1,200 dpi, using Helwett-Packard's PhotoREt III, a color-enhancing technology. Black text printed at 600 by 600 dpi is very crisp and sharp. The PSC 750 isn't a speed demon, but it's not too slow either. The 11MB TIFF test file took almost 2.5 minutes to print at the best-quality-resolution option, but other color test files printed substantially quicker. The printer can handle 150 sheets of letter or legal-size paper. The scanner also works quite well. It features a 600- by 1,200-dpi optical resolution at 36-bit color depth. You can alter settings such as brightness, contrast, and resolution of the HP TWAIN driver if you are unhappy with the automatic settings. We scanned in the same high-resolution TIFF file we used for testing the printer's capabilities and were pleased at the scanner's color accuracy and image-capture quality.

Our only knock against the copier is that it suffers from being ink jet-based, which supports color but tends to be much slower than standard laser copiers. We made a color copy of a large letter-size test print in about 43 seconds. Of course, Hewlett-Packard rates the PSC 750 a lot more optimistically - up to 11 ppm (pages per minute) on black text and 8 cpm (copies per minute) on color graphics pages. The Creative Copy function lets you set the copy size (enlargement and reduction), as well as form a single copy that includes several items from different documents. You can operate the copier manually (and without turning on your PC), or you can control the copier as well as the scanner and printer from your PC, using the Director software. You'll pay less for the HP PSC 750 than you would buying all three components separately, but like all MFPs, you risk having nothing at all if one component goes kaput. And though you can scan while you print, you cannot scan and copy or print and copy, which is another inconvenience to consider. The HP PSC 750 is about $100 more than the comparable Lexmark Z82 we reviewed recently, but it provides a step up in output quality and usability. For a crowded dorm room, a child's room, or even a home office, the HP PSC 750 is a good MFP choice.
